A good cookbook is a thing to treasure. There are so many completely generic ones out there, it's easy to get lost among them. Many of them probably still have good recipes, but it takes more than good recipes to make a truly good cookbook. For example, I will not (willfully) add a cookbook to my collection unless is has full-color photos for nearly every recipe. The pictures are helpful for zeroing in on the kind of recipe you're searching for at the moment, and they're often good for providing plating and decorating ideas.
I'm also a big fan of books that provide helpful tips for each of the recipes within. Sometimes it's an explanation of a lesser-known ingredient, a warning about a step of the recipe that could easily go awry, or maybe just some do-ahead tips for easier entertaining. These extra bits of information can help you prepare your dish efficiently and increase the likelihood that things will come out right on the first try.
